Devin started fly fishing at age 9. He will never forget his first day where he caught a cutthroat on an ant in the first meadow of the famed Slough Creek in Yellowstone on a hand me down fiberglass 7 weight! Though he’d been fishing with hardware since he was a toddler, that day started an addiction to fly fishing that he can't seem to shake.

Tactical Nymphing - Euro Style - Part II
Devin Olsen, a medal winning member of Fly Fishing Team USA, shares the modern day nymphing techniques he and Lance Eagan use to catch fish in the European style. When competing on an international basis you have to be good and have to know how to adapt. We had so many questions on Devin's first show that we going at it again. Join us to continue this great topic.

When he fished against Lance Egan and Ryan Barnes in the former Outdoor Life Network’s Fly Fishing Master’s in 2004, He knew he had to find a way to compete in the sport he loved. It was serendipitous that he worked with both these anglers a year later after they had made Fly Fishing Team USA. He fished in his first regional and made the team himself in 2006. The ensuing years have been more educational than he could have ever imagined and he’s as hopelessly obsessed with fly fishing today as he’s ever been.

This obsession has brought dedication, which has helped him to have competitive success domestically and abroad. The year 2016 marked his 8th consecutive berth as an angler for Fly Fishing Team USA in the 36th Fips Mouche World Fly Fishing Championships in Vail, Colorado. The year prior in Bosnia he was incredibly fortunate to finish with the individual bronze medal and even more fortunate to have been a part of the squad that won the first team medal (a silver) for the USA at a world fly fishing championship. In 2016 they followed that feat with a team bronze. Fly fishing competitions have exposed me to tactics and techniques from incredible teammates and fellow fly anglers from across the globe.

Away from competitive fishing, fish have sculpted his professional life as well. He holds a bachelor's degree in ecology and a master's degree in fisheries science. He currently works for the Nez Perce Tribe Department of Fisheries Resource Management as a salmon and steelhead biologist in Joseph, Oregon. He has a wonderful wife Julia of 11 years, a three year old son Levi whose favorite fish are bull trout, and a daughter on the way who will be whipping up flies in no time. What more could a guy ask for?
